Mission
Sotacarbo is contributing to the development of clean energy conversion technologies to accelerate the energy transition towards circular economy schemes and environmental sustainability.
In order to switch from fossil-fuel based power generation system to technologies using non-programmable renewable sources (such as wind and solar), efficient energy storage systems are mandatory.
To achieve both the energy storage needed to ensure the security of electricity grids and the decarbonisation of sectors still heavily dependent on oil derivatives, the so-called ‘hard-to-abate’ sectors, such as aviation, shipping and heavy industry, it is crucial to develop technologies to produce green fuels - hydrogen and/or derivative fuels made from renewable energy.
Another significant activity that Sotacarbo researchers focus on is the development of technologies for the energy valorisation of waste materials that cannot be recycled today to produce hydrogen and/or other clean fuels such as methanol and dimethyl ether.
