Sotacarbo, established in 1987, is a research organisation with entirely public capital whose shareholders are Regione Autonoma della Sardegna (96%) and ENEA (4%).

Sotacarbo is a Centre of Excellence on Clean Energy: an experimental technology hub with the strategic objective of developing initiatives with a high content of technological innovation and high value for the national energy industry and for the Region of Sardinia.
The Company's shareholders are Regione Autonoma della Sardegna (Sardinian Regional Government) (96%) and ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development)(4%). ENEL and ENI ceased to be shareholders in 1999.
